the Boxes All
of these boxes are hand-made from beginning to finish by me. In some cases I personally
salvaged the Maple and Western Red Cedar from old logging areas or land clearing.
The Spalted Alder was cut by my father and I years ago and has been drying and
seasoning in his barn until I began creating these boxes.
Each
box has 15 to 20 coats of hand-applied, high gloss Polyurethane, for a shiney
finish that will last a lifetime. The color of the boxes is natural, with no stain
applied, allowing the beautiful wood grain to show clearly. The insides of the
drawers are finished with velvet in colors to compliment and enhance the beauty
of the wood. All boxes have plastic protectors on their base. Measurement depths
in the information below do not include the pulls. Colors
of actual wood products will vary somewhat from the photographs shown here, due
to differences in the way your computer and monitor display the image, the conversion
from one media to another, and the fact that they were taken in my living room
- not in a professional photographic studio. About
the Wood Most
of the wood I use is what I've found in old logging sites on the Olympic Peninsula
in Washington state. All of the Maple - Spalted, Bird's Eye, Curly, and Fiddleback
- and the Spalted Alder and Red Cedar is salvaged wood. The rest, such as Purple
Heart, was purchased from Edensaw Woods, where the emphasis is on renewable forest
products. The
pattern in Spalted woods is created by a fungus that invades trees which have
died naturally and have been lying on the forest floor for a year or more. Boxes
made of this wood may have a slight odor when you first receive them. It dissapates
quickly as the box airs out. All
wood, being a product of nature, has irregularities. Some of the boxes, especially
those of Spalted wood, may have tiny holes in them from the termites that once
lived there. Don't worry, the bugs are long since dead and no longer in the wood!
Some may have a small knot or bit of bark intwined into the grain. These things
only add to the character and beauty of the box. |
