As always, at the beginning of every new year there are hoards of predictions from astrologers, psychics, and others of similar persuasions. This article is not about predictions, but instead is about energies that we'll be dealing with during this year, their purpose, and how to use them for the greatest benefit.

Please understand that energies such as those we receive from heavenly bodies as indicated by astrological interpretations, are not absolutes nor are they commandments. They are not "shoulds" or "have tos", but are instead intended as guides to assist us in those areas of our life in which it is timely for improvements to occur. They exist to support and encourage our growth in specific areas of our life and at certain times.

Mercury retrograde is a perfect example of these energies at work. Mercury, the planet of communication, goes retrograde three times a year for three weeks each time. During this retrograde period, things having to do with communication often break down, particularly if there is electricity involved. Computers crash. Phones go haywire. Email systems go down. People can't seem to understand what others are saying and arguments ensue.

During a Mercury retrograde period, anything that breaks down regarding communication is something that has probably been not working properly for some time and has needed to be repaired, retired, replaced, or any of the other "re" words. The energy of Mercury retrograde is best used to, first of all, examine what hasn't been working optimally and determine why. Then the next step is to figure out the best method for fixing the issue.

And so it is with all incoming or shifting energies. Their nature is meant to be examined as to how it is or isn't working in your life and how you might use that energy for your highest and best growth. To that end, I offer here two very powerful energies that we'll be dealing with during the entirety of this year - 2018.

The science of numerology holds that all numbers consist of and radiate outward specific energy. (For more information about this, read my article, The Energy of Numbers.) In order to understand the meaning of their energies, various methods have been devised to "read" them. Traditionally, all numbers in a group, such as a year, are added together until they are a single digit. However, if the numbers add up to 11, 22, or any other double digits, they are deemed to be Master Numbers. As such they have more powerful and unique energies.

This year, 2018, adds up to 11 and as such is the first Master Number. The 11 has been called The Gateway, which means its energy assists one in accessing spiritual guidance for the purpose of attaining higher wisdom and greater knowledge. That means that this year you have the energy of the Master Number 11 assisting, supporting, and guiding you in discerning and utilizing the knowledge that is most beneficial to you in your pathway of evolving yourself to the next level. As you do so, you also will assist and support others in realizing their growth as they move upward to their next level.

In addition to the 11, this year is also a 2. The number 2 holds the energy of choice. What this means in relation to the Master Number 11 is that this year your choices are of paramount importance. You are always at choice. Even choosing not to choose is a choice. This year the importance of your choices will become obviously evident as you reap their results. The energy of the 11 will assist you in recognizing the better, more beneficial choices.

However, since you hold the power of choice you always have the freedom to choose whatever you wish. You may choose to experience what will happen if you opt for the less beneficial path so that you might enhance your learning. Or you may choose the beneficial path because you decide that the result will be of more benefit to you and to others than the potential for learning.

The planet Jupiter has moved into the astrological sign of Scorpio for the entirety of this year.

In case you're not familiar with astrology, I'll share with you some very brief interpretations of these two influences. Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is considered the planet of expansion and growth. It is ruled by the sign of Sagittarius, the archer who is always aiming at the truth. Scorpio is the sign of deep, dark secrets, particularly in sexual matters.

So, put the energy of those three astrological influences together and you have a year of more truths coming to the surface about sexual abuses. This is the beginning, the birth, of a new balancing of energy on the planet of male and female energies. As these secrets are uncovered, the balance of power between male and female will become more equal. This is the beginning of male and female energies working in harmony, rather than one or the other having power and control over the other.

This astrological energy will affect everyone. How the shifts and changes between male and female energy can affect you will show up during this year. As in all beginnings, there is a seed. The seed represents the potential of a specific form. An apple seed, once germinated, will grow an apple tree. It cannot grow into a broccoli plant or a daffodil.

So, too, are the seeds of the human mind specific as to what they will become, once germinated.

However, one who has seeds yet does nothing to encourage their germination will grow nothing. In all instances a seed needs the correct care in order to germinate and thus grow into its potential.

All seeds need to be carefully tended until they are of a stage in their growth when they can withstand the harsher elements. Seed ideas, once germinated, need to be protected until they've grown into stronger form. Should they be subjected to the harshness of certain elements, such as negative criticism, jealousy, and ridicule, before they are strong enough to withstand them, they may shrivel and die.

Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to protect your freshly germinated idea seeds until the time that they are ready to emerge into the light for all to see. Even after emergence, it is prudent to be ever wary of that which could harm a newly-sprouted idea. Prompt attention to the care and condition of the growing ideas will deflect any harm that may portend.

When the seed of an idea is complete with its growth, it is ready to be harvested. Only the grower, the creator, will know when this time arrives.

Care for the seeds of your ideas and they will become productive and valuable realities. Nothing happens by accident. If you have a seed of an idea, it is for you to nurture it, care for it, and grow it into a reality.
